Wing Clipping:
I personally do not recommend clipping your bird's wings.
Here are a few reasons why I don't:

* Clipping Their wings disables them to fly, so if they are playing, they could fall off a ledge, and they won't be able to fly back up.

* They can easily get squashed, sat or stepped on.

* They can't fly and excercise like they are supposed to.

Now some may argue that, it is unsafe to leave them unclipped because they may fly into a boiling pot if you're cooking, or fly out a window. But there is a simple solution to prevent this, put the bird in its cage until you're done cooking and close the windows when you let your bird out. Besides, even with clipped wings, if your bird can fly out the window, what makes you think they can't just jump or waddle out?
Now When You think about getting a Parakeet, You think about a pair of them. Now Although small, easy to care for and great for the "first-pet" they do still require extensive pet care. Just because their small does not mean they come cheap, sure the purchase price is about $10.00 for one from the pet store but you also have to think about their supplies, you need a cage, and not just any "parakeet cage" (we'll talk more about this in "Bird Cages" to the left), food that they have been eating from the pet store or breeder, and don't be fooled, the saying "You eat like a Bird" should only be said to a person who loves to eat, Parakeets can down that food fast!!! And if you're planning on switching their food, talk to your vet, pet store, or bird breeder about tips on this.
and you'll also need:
Alot of Birdie toys (see bird toys for great products)
mineral block
cuttle bone
bowls (food & water)
Perches

And More. And that's just for one, Now you may hear that when you get a bird like this, you need to get two, but that just isn't true. Parakeets are perfectly fine solo as long as they have a human companion to spend daily time with!
You just have to spend at least 2 and a half hours a day
(not necessarily at once)
Playing, Training, Talking, Singing, anything as long as it's some quality time, Even just putting them in a room where you usually almost is spending time with them, they like watching you do your daily dos. And at least one daily fly if their wings aren't clipped. This is pretty much the same with a pair of keets but they like to spend more time with each other that a human, they just chat and play amongst themselves and most of the time, ignore you.
This is best if you won't be home to often but if you work at home or want to have a close friendship with your birdie, one is best. Check out Byrd Toys for bordom busters.
