Shopping List:
Now when your shopping for a Parakeet, you must remember your basics:
*Cage
*Food
*Bowls
*Toys
*Perches
*Swings
*Mineral Blocks & Cuttle Bones
*Millet Spray
Now, This is your basic list, now we'll get down to the details about each item on this list.
*Cage
For the Parakeet, Space is everything, Bigger IS better in this case (just watch the bar spacing only 3/8 inch), DO NOT get a basic "Parakeet Home" OR "Parakeet Cage" for everyday living, this is just too small for your parakeet, no matter how small to function! Check out Cages on the left for more, must read cage info!
*Food
Before you get ahead and pick the "best" you can find, ask the bird's breeder or pet store you're buying from, you must feed the exact same food as the pet store or breeder was or they simply won't eat. If you are planning to switch the food from what they are already eating, wait at least 2 week before attempting the switch, and before you do, ask a vet or a local pet store, or breeder how to do so, it's alot harder than it sounds.
*Bowls
Now you must get 2 bowls, the standard cage will come with 2 but if you get more that one keet, remember, each parakeet needs 2 bowls each.
*Toys
Parakeets love to play, now they don't need tons of toys but you need to buy at least 3 toys (not including perches) to start with, and be sure to get at least 1 with a mirror, you'll be suprised how much they love to look at themselves!
*Perches
For a Parakeet, 1/2 inch is just right!
Check out Cages on the left for more, must read cage info!
*Swings
Now of course these are optional but some birds have a blast on these, but be sure again that it is the right size for your pet, check the height and compare it in your mind. Make sure the swing is tall enough for you bird.
*Mineral Blocks & Cuttle Bones
Mineral blocks and cuttle bones are two different items but are a great investment. Mineral Blocks are well, Blocks and Cuttle Bones look somewhat like, a surf board. Both offer calcium and other essensial minerals that your bird may not recieve from its diet. And they are great for beak exercise and condition.
*Millet Spray
A great treat that keets are crazy about!
They offer great extra nutrition and are a part of a Parakeets diet.
Also another great investment is a Millet spray holder, these usually cost about 1 dollar and most have bells, so they double as toys!
